PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Jesus, Our Greatest and Perfect Helper - October 18th, 2015
Series: Guest Speakers
Speaker: Pastoral Resident Lars Haglund

Main Passage: Hebrews 4:14-16

Referenced Passages:

  • Hebrews chapter 2, 3 & 4. Leviticus chapter 16.
  • Heb 2:1; 4:7,14-16, 5:1-3, 12; 9:12; 10:11-12; 1 Pet 4:12; Rom 5:3-5

Launching Question: Has there ever been a time when a friend or family member tried to help you through something (i.e. a struggle, trial or temptation) and they had never experienced what you’re going through before? How did it make you feel? Please explain.

Sermon Questions:

1. It was explained in the talk how Jesus is our Great High Priest. In the Old Testament, High Priests would make sacrifices year after year for the people’s sin. “The process was never ended, never completed, because the priesthood was not perfect and the sacrifices were not perfect.” Pastor John MacArthur. But Jesus lived the perfect life and made the perfect sacrifice. This makes Him our Great High Priest who understands everything we go through, forever connecting God to His people.

  • In light of who Jesus is, how does this change the way we live today?

2. Was there ever a point in your life when you clung to the “self-help” materials of culture to fix the problem you were facing? (i.e. you got a book, went to a conference or tried to think more positive about your situation.)

  • How does knowing that Jesus will be there “with you” and “for you” when everything else fails—change your perspective on this?

3. Since the Bible is clear that we will go through trials and shouldn’t be surprised by them—how do the tough times draw us closer to Jesus? Please be specific.

  • How can you confidently commit to relying on Jesus more instead of going it alone? (i.e. you tried to rely only on your “superwomen or superman” strength to fight the battles of life.)

4. In the conclusion of the message, an analogy was used to describe the precious access we have to God through Jesus. It was said that Jesus is the only hook to hang our hat on. Using this analogy, do you or have you every placeed your hat somewhere else instead of on the hook of Jesus?

In other words:

  • Have you been avoiding the help you have from Jesus in your life?
  • Or, have you heard about Jesus and not fully dove into the deep waters of His love and grace?

Conclusion Discussion: How can you help those around you understand that in the trails of life they too have a perfect helper named Jesus? Is there someone specific God has put on your heart today?
