PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Preparing for God's Mission, July 5th, 2015
Series: Nehemiah: Building for the Future
Speaker: Pastoral Resident and Connections Team Leader: Lars Haglund

Primary Passage: Nehemiah 7:1-72

Cross Referenced Passages: Nehemiah 1:11, 6:16; 2 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Corinthians 15:10; Luke 10:39-42; John 15:20; Ephesians 6:1-17; Ezra 2:1-69; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Romans 12:3-8; Psalm 127:1.

Launching Discussion: Discuss with the group if there’s ever been a time when you took all the credit on something in your life after leaning on God for help and guidance. Please be specific. How did this change when you understood that God uses us on His mission?

Sermon Questions:

1. Do you agree with this statement “If your devotion to Jesus is number 10 on your ‘to do list,’ you’ll never get around to Him, He must be number one”?

  • Since today’s culture is filled with so many “necessary” things (i.e. Facebook, TV, your Jobs) trying to compete for our devotion, what can we do to prevent “these things” from snuffing out the priority of Jesus in our lives?

2. In the message Lars mentioned, “When you’re devoting your life to God’s Mission-you must be on guard against attacks from the enemy.” It was stated that there are “known” attacks we face and “unknown” attacks we face, until turning to God’s word.

From a known perspective: has there ever been a time you experienced something like this you were aware of (i.e. loss of friends, family, respect)?

From an unknown perspective: has there ever been a time when you didn’t know the enemy was attacking through the voice of culture, (i.e. influential speakers, someone in a peer group) until turning to God’s word?

3. What truths did God reveal to you when you looked to His word to battle against the enemy?

  • How can we help others find this same comfort, freedom and protection?

4. The last point in Lars’ message was that “When you’re on mission for God-you must realize that you have a crucial part to play.” Share with the group some of the gifts God has given you to play your part and strengthen His church.

  • Has there ever been a time when you only used your strongest gift for God’s mission?
  • How does the loving and giving grace of Jesus drive you to give of all you have (i.e. your life, time, talents and treasure) for Him?

Thank you Lars,
These questions are thought provoking and definitely draw one to a closer relationship with and understanding of Jesus Christ, and to look at the mission Christ calls us to.
Great addition to a wonderful sermon.
