PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Doing God's Work and Dealing With Opposition Pt. 2, June 7th, 2015
Series: Nehemiah: Building for the Future
Speaker: Pastor Anthony Orzo

Primary Passage: Nehemiah 5:1-10

Launching Discussion: Since we’ve been talking about doing God’s work and dealing with opposition for two weeks, how has your understanding of this changed, been challenged or confirmed? Please be as specific as possible with your group.

Sermon Questions:

1. Pastor Anthony pointed out that in order for us not to see the exact same issues happen at Restoration that did in Nehemiah’s day (i.e. malice & division) we need be “constantly asking God to protect us from it…and making sure we are never participating in behavior like this.”

  • What are ways as a church we can prevent this type of opposition from happening?

2. It was said in the message that “even a healthy church like ours can run the risk of personal agenda trumping Jesus’ mission and each other.”

  • Have you ever thought about this statement in the context of our church?
  • How can comfort and complacency effect a disciple-making movement at RCPO?

3. Have you ever heard of the term “Consummer Christianity” before? (i.e. when a person begins to see God’s Church Community as an end in and of itself, meant to serve them, as opposed to understanding that healthy community is a two way street. It requires both receiving and giving back.)

  • How prevalent do you feel this issue is in our culture?
  • Has there ever been a time where you have seen, or maybe even embraced consumer Christianity? If you did, what made you abandon it?

4. Since “serving God in the body of Christ is not a request from Jesus,” but rather a command--How can you use the gift God has given you to serve at RCPO and build His kingdom?

  • Do you know what your spiritual gift is? Please discuss this.

5. Do you think, as Pastor Anthony said in his message “that serving God is a unique privilege given to us by God through Jesus?” That “it binds us to each other and when we all do it, we deeply benefit from it and each other?” Explain how?
