Primary Passages: Nehemiah 2:1-10

Launching Discussion: In the past we’ve asked you to share with the group a time where you were given, or experienced Godly vision. In a more specific manner please explain what you felt during that time (ie. fear, nervousness, excitement, etc.).

Sermon Questions:

1. In the sermon, Pastor Anthony talked about how whenever a person is given the opportunity to act upon God-Sized vision they are likely to respond in 3 ways if they are truly following God. The first reaction was fear, the second boldness and the third perseverance.

  • Like Nehemiah, why do you think a person’s first reaction is often fear and maybe a little apprehension. How can fear if left unchecked turn into resistance to change?

2. What do you think about the statement, “people aren’t necessarily afraid of change--they’re afraid of the unknown that often comes with change?”

  • Do you think this is a true statement? Please explain why. Make sure you talk about the importance of 2 Timothy 1:7 in your response.“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

3. Have you ever experienced a time in your life where God’s Spirit turned your fear into boldness like He did for Nehemiah in Nehemiah 2:4?

  • Share the reasons you were afraid and how God helped you overcome this? Make sure you include the verse Acts 1:8 in your discussion. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

4. Do you have any apprehensions about being discipled, or discipling another person? Explain why. Are you actively involved in this right now?

5. The last evidence Nehemiah exhibited of God’s presence in his life was that he had the courage to persevere and overcome his fear. This is a theme that will be seen all throughout the book of Nehemiah. The reason we as believers have no need to fear anything in life is due in large part to the promise God makes us, "to finish the good work he has begun in our life (Phil. 1:6).”

  • How has this truth encouraged you to follow God in the past or even present?
  • Since persevering is a quality most people long for in life, take a few minutes to talk about how you can share this truth with someone in your life right now that is without Jesus?
