Primary Passages: Nehemiah 2:9-20

Launching Discussion: Tell the group about a time you had difficulty being honest with yourself about where you were in life? What was the reason for the difficulty? If you’ve never struggled with this please share why.

Sermon Questions:

1. In the sermon it was stated that Nehemiah’s confidence in being honest about his situation was one of his strengths. In being able to honestly identify where he was he was able to avoid “living in the lie”.

  • Why do you think so many people are uncomfortable about being honest with who they really are and what they are really struggling with?

2. Do you agree with the statement, "Many times we can’t get to the place where God is leading us because we’re afraid to admit where we’re currently at in life?” Explain why, or why not as a group.

3. What role do you think the “internal opposition” of shame and guilt (as mentioned in the sermon) play in keeping people from being honest about where they are actually at in life?

4. Do you feel “shame” is a common attitude people feel--whether self-imposed, or imposed upon by others in our culture? Give some examples and please be as specific as possible.

5. How can dwelling in shame keep a person from becoming the person God wants them to be?

6. How can turning to the cross (Expiation as outlined in the sermon-Jesus died for both the penalty and the effects of sin) help you to overcome those shame obstacles?

  • How can you help others experience the Expiation of Jesus’ cross?
