PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Who Do You Say I Am, August 2nd, 2015
Series: ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What Jesus Really Asks Of Us
Speaker: Scott Perkins

Primary Passages: Mark 8:27 – 33

Cross Referenced Passages: Colossians 1:15; 1 Peter 1:6-9; Matthew 4:1-11; 1 John 4:1-3

Launching Discussion: How do you think someone would describe you if you asked them “who do you say I am?”

Sermon Questions:

1. What are ways that we, and our culture, tend to create a Jesus with whom we are comfortable? What facets of that character are you more and less comfortable with?

2. Matthew 4:1-11 describes the temptations Jesus experienced in the wilderness. Explain which of the temptations you most identify with.

  • What do you learn about Jesus, and hence the character of God, from this passage?

3. Jesus described for his disciples that He must suffer. Peter was changed through the suffering he experienced.

  • How has suffering influenced your faith?
  • What obstacles to faith has suffering provided?

4. In Mark 8:33, Jesus stopped and looked at each of his disciples then said to Peter “get behind me, Satan.” Has there ever been a time when your mind was focused on human concerns rather than the concerns of God?

  • What strategy did you employ in the moment to remind yourself where your heart and mind should be?

6. Describe an element of this week’s message that you found impactful.

  • How will you incorporate this truth into your discipleship?
  • What one change can you make this week to reflect this?
