Primary Passages: Nehemiah 2:1-8

Launching Discussion: If someone who knew nothing about Christianity walked into your CG and asked you to describe what prayer is--what would you say?

Sermon Questions:

1. Do you think it is a true statement to say, "Many people only pray when they need something from God-they do not usually approach God expecting He will ask something from them?"

  • If so, please explain why you feel this is true. If not, also elaborate.
  • What are some of the detriments of seeing your prayer life like this?

2. When it comes to praying for God-ordained vision it will always stretch us beyond that which we can handle on our own. This is perhaps nowhere truer then when we realize "where we are in life and where God wants us to be."

  • If you're willing, please share a time with your CG when you were stretched like this.
  • What were some of the things you felt during that time?

3. How does knowing God is in control of your circumstances, while you are totally responsible for them shape the way you handle any Godly vision in your personal life?

  • How does this truth shape the way we understand how God wants to work in our church when it comes to how we pray, plan, and act towards a disciple-making renewal?

4. In the talk, Pastor Anthony talked about how a disciple is a person who pursues the truth of Jesus in the Bible, in the church family, for the sake of Jesus' mission. He also said that what a disciple does is reproduce those marks in other people. When it comes to the definition of what a disciple is and what a disciple does please discuss the following questions:

a) Look at the marks of what a disciple is and what a disciple does in order and describe some of the particular challenges you think a modern disciple will face in each area.

b) In the modern church, a natural tendency is to want to study the Bible in community at the expense of the mission. Why do you think this is so?

c) Have you ever considered that we are practicing an incomplete form of discipleship when we for whatever reason do not pass on and reproduce the Jesus in us--in others? (Matthew 28:18-20)

d) What are the long term implications for a person and church who does not reproduce the Jesus in them-in others.
