PARTICIPANT'S GUIDE FOR COMMUNITY GROUP GATHERINGS
Sermon: Jesus: Our True Shepherd and His Peace Part 2 - November 15th, 2015
Series: Jesus, Our Good Shepherd
Speaker: Pastor Anthony Orzo

Main Passage: John 10:14-30.

Cross Referenced Passages: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58.

Launching Question: Since this is the second talk in our “Jesus-Our Good Shepherd Series”, take a few minutes to share how God has been speaking to you personally about what it means for Him to be your Good Shepherd.

  • Are there specific ways you are sensing the reality that He is your Good Shepherd?
  • Can you share a way you are experiencing God’s peace since He has promised it to you?

Sermon Questions:

1. What do you think about the statement, “Everyone is looking for a Shepherd to follow in life”?

  • Do you believe this to be true?
  • What are some of the ways you have personally seen, or experienced this truth in life?

2. In Pastor Anthony’s talk he gave us 3 common “shepherds” people often look to in life to try and find an ultimate peace. They are: 1) Relationships, 2) Governments, or Politics 3) and Pastors or other church leaders. While each can offer us a certain amount of peace, none can offer us Jesus’ ultimate peace.

  • With that in mind, why do you think people seem to turn to these “shepherds” with that expectation?
  • What are some of the dangers a person might subject themselves to by seeking an ultimate peace in them--only to realize with the best intentions they could not deliver it?

3. In John 10:14-18, Jesus gives us 3 reasons why He is uniquely qualified to be our Good Shepherd who can lead us to an ultimate peace in life. They are as follows: 1) He knows us better than we know ourselves, 2) He loves us with the same love He has for His Father in Heaven, 3) Because of that love he is willing to voluntarily lay his life down for us. Think through how you would share these beautiful truths with a person who is interested in knowing more about why they should follow Jesus, but isn’t entirely ready to.

  • How would you communicate these “Good Shepherd” attributes in such a way that they would be meaningful to a person “exploring the faith”?

4. One of the great promises of the Good Shepherd is that He gives us a confidence and power to live this life, but also a great peace that we no longer have to fear death.

  • Please have a frank discussion about whether, or not you fear death?
  • If you do, how can Jesus help you overcome that fear?
